Currently we have 5 coaches that play daily into our older clinics that can beat boys 18’s blue-chip juniors. Our academy is also run by a coach that is currently ranked on the ATP Tour. Very few, if any, academies in the US can make claims like those. It is a priority of the Haviland Tennis Academy to have coaches that are experienced at the levels that serious juniors aspire to attain. This is common practice in almost any field. Think about who teaches medical school, law school, business school, and even high school; people that have already graduated from that level, and usually beyond. And yet in tennis it’s common to have “a really nice guy” that wasn’t a highly successful junior player, didn’t play D1 college tennis, and certainly wasn’t good enough to earn an ATP singles ranking, telling you that he knows exactly what your child needs to become a top notch player. In the vast majority of cases, this proves ridiculous. Just consider who the best players in the world look to when they need coaching. They almost always look to former players that have accomplished the goals they’re looking to achieve. Examples of top pros hiring former elite players to coach them in recent years are: Pete Sampras (Paul Annacone), Andre Agassi (Brad Gilbert, Darren Cahill), Andy Roddick (Brad Gilbert, Jimmy Connors, Larry Stefanki), Lleyton Hewitt (Darren Cahill, Peter Lundgren, Tony Roche), Roger Federer (Tony Roche, Stefan Edberg), Andy Murray (Ivan Lendle, Amelie Mauresmo), Novak Djokovic (Boris Becker), Milos Raonic (Ivan Ljubicic), Marin Cilic (Goran Ivanisevic), Kei Nishikori (Michael Chang), Agnieszka Radwańska (Martina Navratilova), and Madison Keys (Lindsay Davenport). These players could choose anyone in the world to coach them, but there is good reason why they choose people who have already accomplished their goals.
Some of our coaches’ accomplishments are as follows: achieved boys 18’s blue chip status on www.tennisrecruiting.net, members of 18 and under national teams in Sweden, England and the U.S., achieved top 10 boys 18’s ITF world singles rankings, achieved multiple wins over top 10 ranked ITF juniors and top 10 ranked NCAA division 1 collegiate players, won junior national championships in singles and doubles, won junior grand slam titles in doubles, won multiple Orange Bowl singles titles, won NCAA team championships, achieved All-American collegiate status in both singles and doubles, and 5 of our 6 coaches were also ranked in both singles and doubles on the pro tour (including 3 ranked in singles in 2015). Our coaches have also played and/or practiced against some of the very best players in the world including Roger Federer (who one of our coaches beat in singles in an ATP Tour event), Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Thomas Berdych, and the Bryan twins. Furthermore, we did most of these things recently and we all still play competitively, which gives us a firsthand view of the skills needed to succeed at the modern game. We are so confident in the playing ability of our coaches that we offer a $1,000 reward to anyone that can beat 3 of our coaches in practice matches. Adults, juniors, college players, and ATP/WTA tour pros are all welcome to take the challenge. Considering all of the experiences and accomplishments of our coaches, we believe that the perspectives and the level of competition that we can offer aspiring junior tennis players is unparalleled.
We would encourage you to use due diligence when selecting a coach, since many coaches tend to exaggerate their backgrounds, and make unprovable statements about their past playing or coaching experiences. We are proud to state that all of our coaches’ backgrounds can be looked up on atpworldtour.com, itftennis.com, itatennis.com, tennisrecruiting.net, or by simply doing a google search of their name plus the word “tennis.” The claims that we make about our coaches are easily validated. Ultimately, if you want to give your child the best chance of becoming a top-notch junior player, getting a college scholarship, or making it to the pros, it’s important to find someone that has accomplished these things and has the ability to impart their wisdom onto other players. Having great coaches will always be a priority at Haviland Tennis Academy, and we can assure you that your child will be guided by one of the most elite coaching staffs in the United States.
